    We take indexes for granted. And tables of contents too, for that matter. But there were not always ToC and indexes. They, just like dictionaries, are the product of human activity.

    Lists? Ooooh … can you imagine the first list? “Hey Charlie, look what I came up with!” followed by long moments of bewilderment and then *click* a moment of realization.
    Our first awareness of technology? No, not our first … that was prolly the fire-keepers. But still: “list” is not “heap” or “pile”.
